Your doggo is probably suffering from a medical issue, skin irritation or anxiety biting issue to need an Elizabethan collar. Get a good one that not only restricts it from scratching or licking or biting itself, but also lets it sleep and rest comfortably.
Most first time pawrents would buy the standard plastic white Elizabethan collar at the Vet clinic when they are told by the vet to buy one. We have used these standard ones and we find them to be a pain for both you and your doggo.
To save you and your doggo from going through this same pain .... here's 3 good alternatives.
Transparent plastic E-collar with little knobs.
Of all the E-collars we have used for our own doggo Muffin and for those boarding with us, this is the best design. Here's why:
- easy to wear and easy to remove too;
- easy to secure with turn knob mechanism;
- available in small to large sizes to cater to all dog breeds;
- adjustable to your dog breed's neck size so you can have the option of selecting a bigger one that extends beyond your doggo's snout;
- black fabric rim cushions it from hurting other doggos that your doggo may knock into.
- clear plastic so you can still see your doggo's face from the side and your doggo can still see things at the side
- easy to clean
The one we have for Muffin is retailing at Pet Lovers Centre shops in Singapore. For those of you shopping from home, you can buy a similar one at our gift shop : Total Pet Elizabethan Collar.
Soft padded opaque E-collar with velcro.
This is another good one we found when Alfred boarded with us and introduced us to his E-collar. We like it because it is
- very easy to wear with just velcro attachment;
- very secure velcro attachment for more tenacious dogs, but hoomans may also find it hard to remove;
- doesn't hurt other doggos if your doggo run into them;
- available in small to large sizes to cater to all dog breeds;
- easy to clean
- soft and comfortable for your doggo to lie on when they sleep with it on.
Soft padded round neck-collar with pull string.
This is not exactly an Elizabethan collar but we feature it here because it is a good alternative. It is light and less restrictive for your doggo, and also soft and comfortable for your doggo to lie on when they sleep with it on. Your doggo won't be knocking into things or getting stuck at narrow openings too.
However it can only stop your doggo from licking or scratching areas near the neck and ears, and limited in preventing your doggo from scratching its face or licking its legs and lower body. Good to have a spare as you will need to wash regularly. If you would like to buy a recovery collar like this, we have a few donut donut designs for you in our online store.
